managing endnotes/footnotes in quark 6

i'm having a bit of an issue with quark 6 (os x). anytime i import a word document with endnotes featuring western numerals (1, 2, 3,...) quark automatically changes them to roman numerals (i, ii, iii,...). we prefer to have them as western numerals. How can we change them back to western numerals in quark? how can i change the default settings to always import and show them as western numerals?
