As I understand it, they are different and you would need both to have total .net compatibility. I have heard that some apps don't work with only 2.0 installed.

They are different, and you will need both installed if you have applications that use the 1.x framework. They install to different locations, and are not one and the same (as you have found out).

I was just about to ask the same as Phantom did, and I would add: I noticed a new running process called "mscorsvw.exe" under TaskManager after of installation of the new .NET 2.0.

Does anyone know what is this process for and/or its purpose?

.NET Runtime Optimization Service v2.0.50727_X86

I've disabled it since I've only used one program that uses .NET 2.0, and it's in Beta right now (got a nasty memory leak at that...).

Thanks for the input. I found this service changed from "automatic" to "manual" start automatically after couple hours from running. I guess it finally did its job
