USB device works in Win 98 but not Win 2K

I have a "Samsung Yp-55" - a portable hard drive / digital music player. It's not working under a fresh install of Win 2K SP4, with USP5.0SR1.

I have a VIA motherboard and the latest VIA USB 2.0 drivers installed. This doesn't help. Also I installed the Yp-55 drivers. I try to select either USB Mass Storage drivers and Yp-55 drivers, or try to select driver files manually; but it keeps claiming that the best drivers are c:\winnt\drivers\usb.inf. Changing the inf dates doesn't fool it into thinking they are better. Whenever I try to change the drivers it wants a reboot but the device always has a question mark on it when it boots up. It says something like the device failed to start. The application for stopping attached devices starts up when I insert the device, but it also shows a yellow question mark next to the device.

So far I've been having to boot into Windows 98 SE to use this device.

Any ideas?
