auburn Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 hi. I'm new here and I'm hoping you guys can help me or point me in the right direction.I'd like to find a way to make all calls to print bring up print previews instead of going straight to the print dialog. Here's why. I manage a cyber cafe and my customers are not aware of how much they are printing. Either they're printing a resume in MS Word and *always* printing a blank page after the document itself...or finding that their printouts from IE or Firefox are either badly formated or have an extra page with only a footer on it. It's also a very serious problem when they hit print without knowing how many pages are going to the printer.I would really like to simply force them to look at the preview first. I've had no success finding out how to do this. Idealy, I would also like to add another dialog quotoing them the price...but I'll take what I can get. If I have to pick the worst offending applications, I'd say Firefox/IE. Firefox, I can probably delve into the source and fix that...but geez, I'd rather not. MS Word is the next big offender. I'd like to fix this problem on the OS level.Any thoughts? I'm mostly a win2k shop, but I'm slowly migrating to xp.thx.
Aegis Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 My local library had a similar problem. They fixed it by having 'print jobs'. If you print from any computer, it goes to one of two locations. This is probably done with a custom print driver. Then the user has to walk over to one of the print stations and login. When they login, they are presented with a screen showing them how many pages it takes and how much it costs, along with the option to delete something they don't want. The only problem is that I don't remember what the application was called .
