Desktop right click context menu

Hi,

How do you go about adding menu items to the context menu when you right click on the Windows desktop? There are various programs to do this but I need to add/program my own.

As far as I know you can't do it without a shell extension using this key : HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers.

I have tried to create a shell key and add programs under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell but it does not seem to work.
