Capricious Speaker Icon In Xp And Xp-pro

For the last couple of years, my speakier icon in the Tray (taskbar) is unpredictable. If it does not appears, I can go to the Control Panel | Multimedia, and uncheck the box that says to show it. I click Apply. Then check the box again, click Apply and it is back for a while.

If I go to an earlier Registry it will be back - for a while. I assume it is something in the Registry, but where?
