September 19th, 2005 Update: Paint.NET v2.5 Alpha 3 is now available. If you already have v2.2 Alpha 1 or v2.2 Alpha 2 installed then we prefer that you install this update via the built-in update mechanism within Paint.NET. Simply click on the green circle in the main UI toolbar right below the File menu, or go click the menu item Help -> Updates -> Check Now.

Here is a list of the important new features and changes:

Renamed from v2.2 to v2.5, as this has turned into more than just a "0.1" point-release.

Fixed some bugs in the new setup wizard. It will no longer crash if .NET is not installed.

Fine-grained history for the Move tool. Now you get a history item for each move, scale, or rotate you perform.

Some subtle bugs in scaling and rotation of selected pixels were fixed.

Session temporary files are now cleaned up after abnormal termination. They are also now stored in %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Paint.NET, instead of in %TEMP%

Effects no longer re-render the portion of the layer that the preview had already rendered.

GIF, JPEG, and TGA settings are preserved between sessions.

Crash log is now placed on the desktop, so it is easier to find, and is compatible with non-Administrator accounts.

Fixed brush preview 'jumping' and artifact dropping.

Fixed image size dialogs (File->New, Image->Resize and Image->Canvas Size) crashing when typing in negative numbers.

Increased size of layer- and Open Recent-thumbnails by 25% (32x32 -> 40x40).

Please note that this build will expire on October 19th. An update will be available before then. The final release of v2.5 will not expire.

As always, feel free to visit our forum to give us suggestions for v2.5, or to report any bugs.
