Laptops, which one

I'm thinking of getting a laptop, however I've got a few that I can't decide between. I'm trying to keep the price under £1000, and I'm looking for one that'll be good for general use, moderate gaming (I use UnrealEd for Uni work so at least good enough to run that well).

Anyway, the 4 I've seen so far are,

I quite like the first 2, although I'm not sure on the sort of reputation that Gateway and Fujitsu-Seimens have. The second two are Sony Vaio's, but their graphics cards aren't as good as the first 2. Does anybody have any experience with these two brands? Any idea which of the 4 laptops is best?

Oh, and I'm open to suggestions of any alternative laptops, or at least where to find those ones cheaper.

Acer Aspire 1692

Acer Aspire 5514

The first one matches the specs of some of the others that you linked to, while the second one does them all in.

Acer is getting better and better. I have a friend with the TravelMate 8194 and it's absolutely fantastic.

Those are certianly nice, but they're over my £1000 price limit, which I don't really want to go over even slightly.

Same with Alienware, they're just so expensive ><

???

The 1692 is cheaper than every laptop you listed...

Oops, think I clicked the 5514 twice by mistake :blushing:

It is pretty nice, and a good price too, but looking at the specs for the Mobility X700 and the Go 6800 it seems that the 6800 has quite a bit more power behind it, so I'm starting to lean towards the Fujitsu-seimens one. Of course that does mean sacrificing battery time compared to the X700....the F-S battery only lasts up to 2 hours I think...

The X700 is no slouch. Yes, the 6800 is a bit more powerful, but I know that the 1692 will easily take care of Doom3 and Half-Life 2 at decent resolution settings.

Not to mention that if you're going to be porting the laptop around anywhere, the 17" screens are just too bulky.

And with average use, the 1692 can get about 4 hours of battery life, with the screen turned down, but with wireless on. That's pretty hard to find in a 15.4" laptop.

Very good points. The 17" was something that was putting me off and keeping me from just saying "Yes I'll get that one" and the X700 does have some whack behind it, more than the Go 6200's in the Sony ones anyway, and the Acer one is the cheapest of the lot (And unlike the Sony ones places actually have the Acer one in stock, heh)

Plus there's the fact it only ways 3kg instead of 5kg that the one with the 6800 weighed :}

And I would be using the wireless since we have a wireless network in the house, and wireless access points at University I believe
