Gekko_uk Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 I have a dc which runs Small Buisness server 2003, Currently, It is a dhcp/dns host. When a client is logged in they can surf the net fine, but I had an idea, that say, worse case server goes down, they would loose their internet connectivity. So, I entered 2nd DNS as the one from isp.... but this dosent work, should I be puting my routers Ip here to allow internet access to work when server is down?
At0mic Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 but when the server goes down you've lost DHCP as well. you would have to set your router to do DHCP/DNS
chilifrei64 Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Correct.. you have lost your dhcp server.. one thing to keep in mind.. if DNS isnt working on the SBS it will not automatically query the second DNS server.. only if the first one either doesnt respond on the network or the DNS Server service is stopped.. Just to make sure I am clear.. IF DNS is running the clients wont query the second dns server becasue the first dns server responded with a "i dont know" response.. therefore giving the computer its answer.. But yea..you will want to configure a second DHCP server as well with seperate scopes.
Gekko_uk Posted September 21, 2005 Author Posted September 21, 2005 cheers guys, makes sense now.One thing though, could I have router DHCP running at same time... or would I have to just turn this on in event of a failure?I would imagine it wouldnt work at the same time, ie due to the fact how would the machine know where to grab ip from, or would it only look for another address if initial one was unavailable?I thought with DHCP one it issued an address ie 192.168 etc then went down, the machine would still be able to function.... but obviously not.THanks again.
chilifrei64 Posted September 22, 2005 Posted September 22, 2005 you can run them both at the same time.. just make sure you have different scoped..
