betamax Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 If I'm in windows doing something like copying or extracting a file, or even trying load a game, my system will just turn off. No error, no warning, just a click and it turns off. The power light on my tower is then left blinking on and off. I have to turn off the power supply and turn it back on if i want to power up my computer again. I just reinstalled windows fresh and it's still happening. I have no idea what could be causing this other than my power suppy not putting out enough power. I just hope it's not my drive. My motherboard is an ASUS A7V266 and my hd is a WD2000JB.Any ideas?
Asin Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 If the power light is blinking on and off, then it's possible that your computer is in Standby mode. You may have inadvertantly set some sort of keyboard shortcut somewhere that tells your system to standby on that keystroke.
RJM Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 (edited) I've seen that with some bad power supplies, they go into shutdown and the power supply light flashes. Then you have to turn off the power switch to get it to come back on.(It's not that its not putting out enough power, it's just a common failure mode. The capacitors in the power supply go bad and the power supply goes into shutdown when the ripple voltage gets too high.) Edited September 16, 2005 by RJM
Gee Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Check for bad caps on the motherboard itself. IF you find leaky caps or blown caps near the CPU, then that is the culprit. Also check the CPU temperature, if there is poor contact between the CPU and heat sink, then that is usually another cause for the shutdown.
betamax Posted September 16, 2005 Author Posted September 16, 2005 i nearly cooked my mb. my fan started dying and my cpu temp was at 183. i'm sure i probably melted something then.i have a new heat sink and fan and it holds steady at 130 now, still hot but ok. if i fried a cap on my mobo i'm done. good thing it's an older machine.
Gee Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Well that is definitely the reason why it shutsdown. The temperature is way too hot.For those of us that are metric (basically the rest of the world)183 F = 84 C130 F = 54 CI am sure the shutdown problem will go away, unless you have blown caps
