generic card reader

i have a new mesh computer with a 7 in 1 internal generic card reader.When i look in my computer i see the card reader there as removable media.When i insert my sony momory card into the slot the computer seems to think about it for a minute or so then the removable media icons just dissapear.The only way i can then get photos off my camera is with the usb cable sipplied.How can i get this reader to work as it should.I must also say i have the same problem with the front mounted usb ports as well!
