King of Doom
I have installed xp & vista on my pc is it possible to boot xp as default os.If so how do i do it.RegardsColin Bate<{POST_SNAPBACK}>It is really easy: On my system my main drive has two partitions. One for XPand the other for Vista. My XP installation is on C: and my Vista installation is on F:I copied the F:\Windows\System32\winload.exe (Vista Installation) file toC:\Windows\System32 (XP Installation)Then I edited the boot.ini file as follows:Original boot.ini:[boot loader]timeout=10default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS[operating systems]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP HomeEdition" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFFmulti(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Longhorn"/NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF /FASTDETECT /USENEWLOADERNew Boot.ini:[boot loader]timeout=10default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS[operating systems]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP HomeEdition" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF /USENEWLOADERmulti(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Longhorn"/NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF /FASTDETECT /USENEWLOADERAs you can see I just added the /USENEWLOADER switch to the XP Installation. And changed:default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWSTo: default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWSThis will also get you down to only 1 boot screen.Kind Regards Edited August 19, 2005 by King of Doom

realgujju
the easiest way to do so is- right click my computer - properties - advance tab - under startup and recovery click settings- select default system under default operating system dropdown menu.you can also set the timings. if this does not work then you got to follow king of doom's steps. spacesurfer
This is an old thread and things have changed since Vista release. For the benefit of those searching on multibooting, see the following thread:Multiboot XP and Vista.
