hongt_99 Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I have installed a new exchange 2000 environment. The active directory domain is called abc.cde.xyz.com, the email address is the same as the active directory domain. All my server is in abc.cde.xyz.com domain, the dns has a forwarder to outside dns to resolved outside domain. I am having problem sending email to hotmail, yahoo, all outside domain. I am able to send email to a parent domain called cde.xyz.com, the parent domain cde.xyz.com is not in the same network so it resolved thru outside dns server. When I used smtpdiag, I got an error during the phrase checking mx record and got error 220, server is not accepting connections. Thanks in advance
chilifrei64 Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 ensure that your external IP address that smtp traffic is going out on is configured with a reverse DNS entry.. If you can send to some domains and not others then it is most likely this problem. If it gets to some.. your stuff is working.. if certian ones dont go through they are blocking it.. most big name free mail hosting companies will perform a reverse dns lookup on your domain name and verify it is a valid somain.
hongt_99 Posted August 12, 2005 Author Posted August 12, 2005 What does it mean when I used smtpdiag and it eror out atChecking MX Server list for jsmith15@yahoo.comconnecting to mx3.mail.yahoo.com [64.156.215.7] on port 25error: expected "220". Server is not accepting connections.failed to submit mail to mx3.mail.yahoo.comThanks
chilifrei64 Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 when you ran smtpdiag.. what were the command line options you ran with it.. were you sending to your server or to yahoo's and what name were you trying to send to and from.....basically what did you type.... smtpdiag user@hotmail.com user@yahoo.com -vwhat was it.and honestly.. i wouldnt take into effect too much what smtp diag spits back out.. i just tried it with gmail and it didnt work but i can send to them just fine from my domain..
hongt_99 Posted August 12, 2005 Author Posted August 12, 2005 In smtpdiag, I used smtpdaig user@mydomain.com user@yahoo.com. I checked the dns and there is a reverse dns. If there is a reverse dns, what else could be the problem that it is not allowing to send outside domain? Thanks in advance.
chilifrei64 Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 is the reverse DNS entry pointing back to your domain name or to the ISP?can the computer resolve external DNS names. you started off by saying hotmail, yahoo, all domains.. this means ALL domain names rightcan you telnet into yahoo or hotmail on port 25 and manually type in the commands to send an e-mail?
hongt_99 Posted August 13, 2005 Author Posted August 13, 2005 The reverse entry is pointing back to my dns name not my isp. I am able to resolve the mx record to my email domain. All the domain I mention earlier are domain name. Where should I try to telnet on port 25 from? Is it from my exchange server?Thank you
chilifrei64 Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 you want to telnet into yahoo or hotmail on port 25 from your exchange server.. here is a tutorial on how to do this. http://weblogs.asp.net/owscott/archive/200.../15/394681.aspx
hongt_99 Posted August 14, 2005 Author Posted August 14, 2005 I will run the test on Monday when I get into the office. I was also doing some research on the net and discover that Mcafee Viruscan 8.0i block outbound smtp port 25 by default. I hope this is the problem and I can just edit the policy. Thanks
chilifrei64 Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 That was going to be my next guess. I once had a problem with Symantec for Exchange and that shut down all of my email...
