Fury Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 Ok I have three computer all with wireless adapters/cards and can all connect to the internet via my wireless router. Now i wanted to network these computers to be able to share files between them and still be able to get on the internet. I have tried the "Create a new wireless network" and used my USB pen drive to load configuation files on each of the computers. When i do this two of the computers automatically can no longer get on the internet, and I cant find them on the network. My Question is number one, How can i uninstall a wireless network. andTwo how can i get these 3 computers networked so that i can transfer files between them?
chilifrei64 Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 To make things easier... dont use the Wizards.. First thing first .. Right click on my computer and select properties.. go to the network identification tab and select workgroup. Change this to anything you want but it MUST be the same on all 3 machines. Also, Make sure all 3 computers have DIFFERENT computer names.. Next you have to set up your IP Scheme. for 3 computers and ease of me telling you how to configure a DHCP Server.. we are going to staticly assign themI like to use 10.0.0.x because it is easy to type.Set your router to IP Address 10.0.0.250 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0Set Computer1 to 10.0.0.1 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 DG 10.0.0.250Set Computer2 to 10.0.0.2 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 DG 10.0.0.250Set Computer3 to 10.0.0.3 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 DG 10.0.0.250Under DNS Servers... use the ones your ISP gave you.. if you dont know waht those are.. then just look for a few free public dns servers you can use. Turn off Windows Firewall..(you are protected by your router) Turn off simple file sharing in windows XP ... Tools->Folder Options->Uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing"Disable your guest accountCreate usernames and password identically on each computerIf computer 1 has a username of john and password of doe then the other 2 computers need the same username and password... This will allow authentication to pass to each computer without prompting you for a password. This will get you running.. Obviously if you knwo what you are doing you can use whatever IP scheme you want and can enable windows firewall and use simple file sharing.. But this was just my example.. As long as you can get them connected to the wireless network.. you should be fine.
rendrag Posted July 23, 2005 Posted July 23, 2005 you may not have to go that complicated... what I did was make sure all the computer names were different, and that all 3 computers were in the same workgroup. Some routers have it setup that wireless clients cannot talk to any other PCs on the network, so you might have to check your router to see if that's available/enabled in your router.for whatever reason, sometimes the computers won't show up in network places, but if you go to start -> run and put in "\\computername" without quotes, it should open the computer name you're trying to access
