Why is a port scan attack?

I am using Sygate personal firewall and it keeps on shouting that there is a port scan attack.

I usually block the attack. It tries to access MSTask.exe

Hi,

a Portscan is not to be threatened as a attack directly. Someone is just probing what ports your System has open (A port is a Network I/O Interface where a Programs listen)
