Check your startup programs (Start->Run->type msconfig->Startup) to see if anything AOL or BT related shows up (Google can help identify what each entry is). You can disable anything that you don't need starting up (i.e. anything that isn't anti-virus or firewall) if you'd like.Can you uninstall the drivers from Add/Remove Programs and then plug in the modem and have it work? I've found that even after "removing" drivers, sometimes the actual drivers themselves stay behind, and Windows is able to isntall the hardware by itself.
