Biohead Posted June 18, 2005 Posted June 18, 2005 Just getting round to putting linux on the old box and wondered whether you could put WinXP ME on it?Has anyone tried it?It would make a nice PC and should be able to do quite a few stuff.
Nerwin Posted June 19, 2005 Posted June 19, 2005 I don't think you can because i was going to try to put windows xp pro on it and i talked with many people and they said you can't they said you can only put linux on it just like the ps2 you can put linux on that too. But i don't know if i'm right or not.
Gouki Posted June 19, 2005 Posted June 19, 2005 I really doubt this is possible. It would be cool tho...
mark strelecki Posted June 19, 2005 Posted June 19, 2005 Check out these sites. Seems to be more than just an idea.... http://www.xbox-linux.org/http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic6219.htmlhttp://www.cc.gatech.edu/~ranma1/linux_install.htmlhttp://sourceforge.net/projects/xbox-linux/http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/debian.phphttp://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/60/62/And see lots more hits at www.google.com, here:http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=...G=Google+SearchI'm gonna go look and see if anybody's thinking of doing Win2K or XP on an XBox.
Biohead Posted June 19, 2005 Author Posted June 19, 2005 I don't think it's even worth trying to put XP on a ps2. 133mhz is the worst current gen console around, the xbox still only has a measly 733mhz.Anyway, all you need is a copy of XP (mce) that will run/install on linux. But if it fails there are some specially modified linux versions that are for the xbox.
Gouki Posted June 19, 2005 Posted June 19, 2005 Ive been thinking about this. How about installing WINE on Linux (installed on Xbox) and use any* application u want from Windows.* Not all of them are compatible with wine.I use some of these ones on my machine with linux.Web Design:Macromedia FlashMX (Wine)Macromedia DreamweaverMX (Wine)NVU (OSS) http://nvu.com/index.htmlQuanta (OSS) http://quanta.sourceforge.net/Bluefish (OSS) http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/-----------------------------------------------------------------3D Animation: (Caso faças alguma!)Alias Maya http://www.alias.com/eng/index_flash.shtmlSoftimage XSI http://www.softimage.com/home/SideFX Houdini http://www.sidefx.com/Blender3D (OSS) http://www.blender3d.com/Maxon Cinema4D (Wine) http://www.maxon.net/index_e.htmlNewtek Lightwave (Wine) http://www.newtek.com/-----------------------------------------------------------------Image Work: Cinepaint http://cinepaint.sourceforge.net/IFX Amazon Paint http://www.ifx.com/amazon/GIMP 2.0 http://gimp.org/Photogenics http://www.idruna.com/index.htmlDa Vinci http://www.davsys.com/Image Magick (OSS) http://imagemagick.org/Maxon BodyPaint3D (Wine)Adobe Photoshop 7 (Wine)
InTheWayBoy Posted June 19, 2005 Posted June 19, 2005 I've seen somethings somewhere about installing linux and then using some emulator to install Win98, but it was slow as hell. You can't install any Windows OS directly to the xbox, and so the only option is the previously menitoned emulation. You have to remember that the xbox, while very close to a PC, is still limited in many ways. The 733 is a Super-Celeron of sorts, and it only has 64MB of RAM. I don't think you could get any sound or video drivers for it either. Again, with those limited resources running in emulation its pretty much only for show and tell, not to actually use. There is a section of xbox-scenes forums dedicated just to this topic, and after a quick look everyone is just bitching back and forth and there isn't any real solid info. Here's the link:http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showforum=68Good luck!
