Windows Media Player 9/10

Both Windows Media Player 9 and 10 behave the same way: if I play a video file (avi, wmv, mpg), just before the end of it the screen turns black (but I can still hear the audio). The other players I usually use (BSplayer, Media Player Classic) work fine.

Has anybody experienced something like this? If so, how did you manage to fix it?

I tried with WMP 9 and 10 with the same results.

UPDATE: Lowering the hardware acceleration solved the problem. But now that everything works, I wonder why it happened. In the past I've never had to do that, so why now?
