hi every1 gotta little problem. ireplaced my laptop cpu a pavilion zd7000 series notebook.

I use to have a 3.06 cpu in there and it died out baught a new one P4 3.06 533fsb/512k

and now when i right click on my computer ---- properties , in system properties under general it says:

genuine

intel ® CPU 3.06

1.6 ghz

512 mb of ram

My question is wy does it say 1.6 if I have a 3.06 it does not show on my brothers laptop.

I have updated the bios

Then iwent into bios to maybe change some settings in there but nothing can be changed and in the bios it alsoo says 1.6 for some reason

I talked to the person who sold me the CPU and he sent me a mail:

it's a mobile CPU, you have to set it to max performance in order for it to run at 3.06

can any1 help me out plz or knows how to set it's max performance...cause in bios i can't chnage anything it's like you can only change the date and time

I'm guessing that the processor is a P4-M, and not a straight up P4. If that's the case, then your computer is doing what it should.

Intel processors have SpeedStep technology built in. Unless you're running on Max Performance or Always On, the processor will adjust its speed based on the CPU load. By running at a lower speed the processor uses less power and generates less heat.

To access the power management features, go to

Start->Control Panel (Classic view)->Power Options.

Here you'll be able to select which power profile you want. I would also recommend putting a check mark in "Always show icon on the taskbar" under the advanced tab. With this, you can single click on the icon and select the power profile you want (very handy for changing it on the fly).

If you're not using your laptop for gaming all the time, I would set it to "Portable/Laptop". If your computer needs the extra power, the processor will speed up - if not, it will sit at a lower 1.6GHz.

Hope this helps!

thanks dude for the advise but i tried that and it will still show 1.6 in system folder and bios i guess it is normall at this point.

I think the cpu before was not a p4-m like you say

I wanna know is it normall though it says in bios 1.6 although it is a 3.06...

and even if it does not show 3.06 i feel like it is running very fast but htere is no way to check at what speed it is running right let's say you burn a cd obviously the speed should go to 1.8 or even 2.0 ghz

thnaks for your time and help

let mek now if you have any other advise for me

The Intel Speed stepping is a finite change. On Pentium 4 chips it has two stages, full or half speed. The Pentium-M chips found in Centrino laptops have 5 steps.

One way to look at the clock speed is by using Everest Home Edition. Do a google search to find it. It will tell you pretty much everything you would want to know about your hardware. For the processor, it will tell you the bus speed and multiplier, which together determine your processor's speed.

thanks so much for the help i will try this tonight after work to make sure it is working

so basically you are telling me everything is fine with the processor right

I would think so. Just because the processor isn't working at full speed all the time doesn't mean there's a problem with it. My laptop is a Pentium-M 1.4GHz, but it usually idles at about 600MHz.

Use Everest to determine your processors speed, and then run an intensive app (Like Prime95) and run Everest again (while running Prime95). If the processor speed goes up to full while working hard, then you're all good.

this is what i got in the cpu test with everest while running prime 95

Hmm... that doesn't look quite right.

Let me take a step back and get some more info about the original problem.

If you put the computer into Max Performance or Always On, does the CPU speed increase? (It is a P4-M by the way ;) )

You said you had updated the BIOS, but have you reinstalled the chipset drivers? (I know HP has them... my Compaq does)

A few questions may help put things in order:

How did the original CPU go bad?

Was it covered under warranty?

If not, did you replace the CPU yourself?

Did you replace the CPU with the same one you had?

Did you buy it from HP or from a third-party?

Did you check to see that the CPU you bought was compatible with the HP motherboard? (If the CPU is a different model)

You said you had updated the BIOS, but have you reinstalled the chipset drivers? (I know HP has them... my Compaq does)- done

my motherboard is a intel 865pe andi dl'd the chipset and i downloaded th infinst.exe driver

A few questions may help put things in order:

How did the original CPU go bad? it did not i gave it to my brother

Was it covered under warranty? yes

If not, did you replace the CPU yourself? yes

Did you replace the CPU with the same one you had? i have no idea if it was the same i

baught a p4 3.06 512k/533 fsb and appearently it is a mobile

Did you buy it from HP or from a third-party? third party hp would charge like 700$

Did you check to see that the CPU you bought was compatible with the HP motherboard? (If the CPU is a different model)i did not actually i will do that but if it is booting correctly it should be the right one if not it would not accept it

what should i do ...thank you so much for all the help you are giving me

i did see it go up to 16.05 after the chipset install

Why would you do this? Laptop hardware is finicky as it is... you don't really want to go messing with it if you don't have to.
Was it covered under warranty? yes

Sorry to say that if it was, it's not anymore. By opening up the laptop, you've voided your warranty.

Did you check to see that the CPU you bought was compatible with the HP motherboard? (If the CPU is a different model)i  did not actually i will do that but if it is booting correctly it should be the right one if not it would not accept it

Just because it will boot, doesn't mean it's fully compatible. If you have a spare laptop hard drive, I would try installing Windows again. Maybe windows is still trying to run with your old processor.

Unless you really know what you're doing, you typically don't want to mess with the internals of your laptop. They're specifically put together by the manufacturers and aren't as cross compatible as computers built from parts.

actually it was running with a 3.06 before as for opening up the cpu it is made so you can change it on these laptops it's just 4 screws on the back with a plate then remove the fan 4 other scrwes iwill try reinstalling OS again though

one more thing after i istalled the chipset driver like you told me too i saw it go up to 1.605 when running the test with prime 95

will reistall OS then i will post again for news
