Suddenly unable to boot.

Saturday night I used my computer normally and turned it off when I went to sleep. When I turned it on sunday morning windows would load, take me to the welcome screen and eve log in using my user. However the only thing I could see as my wallpaper, no explorer. I tried hitting ctrl+alt+del but it didn't work. I rebooted, started in safe mode, and was able to use windows. After removing every program that booted with windows I tried again, but normal boot wouldn't work. I finally gave up and decided to do a COMPLETE format of the entire drive. Reinstalled windows, and yet, the problem persists. Do you know what is this?

It does sound like hardware error. Do you see your BIOS screens as before? Any settings in BIOS changed?

Disconnect everything except the harddrive, 1 stick of RAM, 1 optical drive, and the keyboard and mouse (connected to PS/2 if possible).

Can you boot into WinPE or Knoppix?
