Are you logged in as an administrator to your PC? if not, no you can't install.

Are you doing the correct update? if you have MSN Messenger 7 installed, the update for Windows Messenger & MSN Messenger 6.1 | 6.2 WILL NOT WORK.

Maybe the downloaded file is corrupt - delete it and re-download and then re-install

Hi oioldman,

Thanks for your reply. The problem seems to be that I have deleted all the files. I had version 7 installed, and deleted teh whole lot. However, when I tried to re-install it, it told me that I can only download version 7 if I have already downloaded a previous version, namely 6.2 or the like. I tried to download that, and from tehre do an upgrade, but it wouldn't allow me even to do this much. Strange really. Technically, therefore, at the moment, I have nothing installed.

Sorry for what might sound like an extremely stupid question, but could you explain what you mean about being looged on as an administrator?? I am a complete beginner when it comes to computer-y things!!

Thanks again...

Administrator rights means you an install and un-install programs correctly.

Deleting files, does not un-intstall it.

Seems as though you will need to do a registry clean of MSN Messenger bits that are left. Registry Mechanic will assist, though i have never used it. Once these have been removed you can then re-install MSN Messenger v7.

Again, you can only doe this if you have admin rights - to know this open the control panel and select user. Is your username there? does it say Computer Administrator next to it? if yes, then close the box and use Add/Remove to un-install programs safetly. Try this with MSN and it may work even though some files are missing.
