N3xu5 Posted May 18, 2005 Posted May 18, 2005 heyI have a problems using the automatic update feat. in SP2. I have it configured so that it will tell me if there are any updates ready and then let me handle the download. The problem is that when the yellow icon appers I click at and it displays the updates available and then I click the button and automatic update just disappers and along with the yellow icon.I can then disable the automatic update feature and reenable it again and the whole thing repeats itself What could be the problem here?
oneless Posted May 18, 2005 Posted May 18, 2005 i think this is normally .there , the update is making in the backgroung , and use just a small portion of your bandwidth of internet . so it take more time for that . after downloading all , WU ask you for installing the updates.if you want more speed , make it manually with Windows Update link .is just an opinion , can be anything else there .
tarquel Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 I know what you mean N3xu5 but I've never tried fixing it yet - it happens to a few of them at work. I believe (but can't confirm it) that part of the WU software is/has become corrupt and causes it to stick. Please someone say if this isn't the case, but as I said, its not something I've fully looked into yet.Just for info:- are you running SP2?- if so, did it come with SP2, installed manually via file on a cd/HD, or through Windows Update?- if you can use Windows Update manually, is there a list of them that are avaliable? i.e. ones that should have been downloaded to the machine and then it would have asked you to install (or custom) them- If there are some listed, does it download them and install them correctly? You may want to try running all the usual scans (A/V, Anti-Spyware) along with registry cleaners/fixers/optimisers (as it maybe down to corrupt settings in the registry) and also clean out temp files and prefetch (using a tool - not got the link to one handy but other topics on here should have it) and see if that makes a differencePlease post back as I'd like to know whats causing the prob too so I can fix it in the future.Regards,N.
Martin Zugec Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 2N3xu5: Look at my blog (martinzugec.blogdrive.com), I posted to script to solve SP2 WU problems... BTW are you sure it is a problem? Oneless talked about it - isnt it just queuing job to bits queue? Simple way to find out - did the hotfixes installed or not?
tarquel Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 nice sript - look forward to trying it out on the pc's where i get trouble with WU. cheers. No, what 2N3xu5 refers to describes what I see happen on a few pc's at work - i cant remember the exact detail but the updates dont install, and in my case, wont install if you visit WU too But I'll be giving your little script a blast to see how it goes ThanksNath.
Martin Zugec Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 Feedback please I tried it few times and it worked (show it on one presentation and received tons of thank email), so hope so it will help you, too... BTW for debugging WU problems - what can you see in you windows update log?
