Okay,

The first time you connect a USB device to a specific port, Windows treats it as new hardware and installs the driver for it. After that, it always "remembers" that device.

Now if you plug that same device into a different USB port it treats it as a new device, but doesn't need to install the driver.

So, the question is this... How do I clear that "history" or "memory" of connected devices?

The issue I have is that with a blackberry device, after a time, it stops recongnizing the blackberry when I plug it in. So then I have to plug the cable into a different port to get it recognized. Since a machine only has so many ports, eventually I'm going to run out...

If the device isn't connected, then it isn't listed in Device manager, so there's no way to "remove the hardware".

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

You might run regedit and navigate here after detaching all the

non-functioning devices:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB

Identify which keys under this one correspond to the non-functioning

devices. Export a copy of them, then delete them. Then reattach one device

at a time, loading the drivers per the manufacturer's instructions (some

need to be installed prior to attaching the device).

I suggest that you export a copy as a safeguard, you can delete them

afterwards. If removing a key causes problems (it shouldn't, but you never

know), then you can double click the exported copy in order to put it back.
