On 4 very different computers we've had some irritating problems with a IE update. It's the Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 update. On each of the 4 computers the error: "Can not download the necessary components for the installation. Check that you are online, or try later"

(This is translated from Norwegian. It might say something different in english etc.)

We downloaded the setup from a site and it worked on 3 of the 4 computers. On the last one the same error appeared.

Have anyone else encountered this problem? How did u solve it? I've only gotten the error with Windows 2000 pro.

You need to download the latest "ie6setup.exe" file from MS downloads section. Its approx. 700 KB or so, the last I saw.

Then, while running it and going through its screens, choose your languages, and there's an option to download ALL required files for install on ALL systems. Enabling that checkbox will start download of the entire network install of IE6SP1. You should end up with a folder approx. 72 MB in the ProgramFiles folder. Now put this folder on a CD or a network share, and it will install fine without needing to download anything more.

Hoping this helps....

A repair from the windows cd with the inf file might have worked. If IE wasn't listed in add remove.

Maybe.. But that we'll never know.. ;) No, seriously.. I'll remember all of these tips just in case I run into the problem again..

It's just so strange that this error with IE SP1 not wanting to download happens on all the pcs we've reinstalled this last month.. Maybe there's something more than just the pcs... *wondering* Guess I'll just have to wait and see if I ever find an explanation.. :)
