bforglanz Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005 I have a Dell Inspiron notebook computer and the Windows Explorer is not working. When you click on the shortcut in accessories, there is an "Error" message. What can I do to fix this? Thank you for any ideas...Becky
bforglanz Posted January 2, 2005 Author Posted January 2, 2005 I click on Windows Explorer and I get a small blue box that says Error on top and Explorer! in the middle of the box. I click OK and it takes me to the screen of My Documents. Unfortunately, I can't send a snapshot because the notebook is my son's and he forgot to bring all the cables, etc. I went to Dell and looked up troubleshooting tips and this seems to be the fix. If you attempt to open the My Documents folder from the desktop icon and you get an Explorer error or nothing happens, there may be a .DLL file registration error or a corruption of the Windows registry. Follow the detailed instructions below to repair the My Documents folder link in Microsoft® Windows®. Repair the My Documents Folder LinkClick the Start button and then click Run.The Run window appears. In the Open: dialog box, type:regsvr32 mydocs.dllPress the <Enter> key.A confirmation box that says DLL file registered appears.Click the Start button and then click Run.The Run window appears. In the Open: dialog box, type:regeditClick the OK button. The Registry Editor window appears.Click the plus sign (+) next to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder.Click the plus sign (+) next to the Software folder.Click the plus sign (+) next to the Microsoft folder.Click the plus sign (+) next to the Windows folder.Click the plus sign (+) next to the CurrentVersion folder.Click the plus sign (+) next to the Explorer folder.Click the plus sign (+) next to the User Shell Folders folder. On the right window pane locate the entry named Personal and confirm that it points to the correct path of My Documents on your hard drive (C:\My documents for Windows 98 and Windows ME operating systems; %USERPROFILE%\My Documents for Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems). If the entry is empty or different from the actual location, double-click on Personal and change the data value to the actual location. When I type in the first command of regsvr32 mydocs.dll, a box pops up and says DllRegisterServer in mydocs.dll succeeded. Then when I type in the regedit, the screen pops up for a second and then goes away so I can't verify if the plus sign is there or not. Does this help at all??? Thanks...Becky
XPero Posted January 2, 2005 Posted January 2, 2005 It's weird...So you type "regedit" in the Run box and regedit doesn't appear? The instructions seem to be correct...they must work. Anyway try this:- Run "System Restore" (you can find it in Start-->all programs-->accesories-->system tools)- Scan your computer with a antivirus softwareIf this doesn't fix your problem..sorry, no more possible solutions for meHope it helps
