how to install text mode drivers?

how can i install DOS drivers for an external USB HDD in to the text mode part of windows setup??

atm it just gets to "starting windows" (in text mode section) and freezes until i turn the external drive off... it also does that when i try and start windows... it just sits there until i turn the drive off the once its off windows continues to load

so i figure i need a USB DOS driver... but then how do i intigrate it into text mode setup??

i remember there was a thread about this before but i just spent 20mins searching for it and i cant find it

i dont know if the thread will even help me so i post the question here too...
