Hello, a few days back I come across a page in the Neowin forum that told you how to disable the File Protection in Windows XP SP1, if has a replacement file and a reg code, Well since Neowin is down I dont have access to this resource.

So does anyone know how to disable WFP in SP1

Thanks in advance :)

hi ash, ok im not sure how neowin went about it but...

heres one way, this was given to me by a friend, Lyndon, so credit to him. i havent tested this yet though.

open a command window and using the command:

attrib -r -s -h C:\location\of\file

you can remove wpf from single files or groups at a time, so in theory:

attrib -r -s -h C:\WINDOWS\*

Should remove it for all files and folders under the WINDOWS directory.

my DOS is a bit "rusty" but that should do the trick.

Thanks for the help, but I'm looking for a replacement file for the WFP main file, it makes you overwrite any protected file without windows having a fit and replaceing it.

It was very handy, but since I have upgraded my machine and formatted my drive I lost the file :)

TweakXP can turn off Windows File Protection... :moon: Look for it on Google..

But in SP1 Microsoft didlt let users do it with a simple fox of the registry so you have to patch a system file now.

I've tried it with X-Setup

but a simple command can remove the protection, whats the problem? just go to start > run type CMD, put the prompt in.. voila.

or am i missing something...............?

ash...sorry about not being able to give you want you want like neowin can. See the issue is most of use here enjoy or feel its more safe and proffesinal way to hack your system if you choose to do it through the cmd prompt VS. a reg add-on. You never know what else the reg addon has included as seen in the past. What FthrJACK has posted does the same thing.

ok, Well the CMD and the RegEdit way dosent work for XP anymore since SP1.

Whats why it needs a hex edit of that file I mentioned
