Winrar and ISOs

Recommended Posts

First of all, I don't know if I'm in the right forum, so don't hesitate to move it please :)

Hi all, I had a weird experience trying to make my own unattended XP pro CD : All the creation process went fine, thanks too nLite and wonderful guide here at msfn.

When I finally tried to install my ISO via vmWare, the install crashed after the first reboot (T-39). The error msg was "SXS.dll missing in /I386/asms/5100/windows/ blablabla" (sry I'm unable to translate it from french).

I tried the following with no success :

- DL the dll and insert it in the ISO manually

- tried VirtualPC instead of vmWare

- stopped deleting the more component/services I could

And I figured the problem could come from the first thing I did : uncompress my Windows XP Pro ISO ! I did it with Winrar as I always do. So I tried with Daemon-tools and that was the solution !

Hope it helps

Any comments/corrections appreciated ;)

Does anyone know if WinRAR corrupts ISO files?

Have you compared the file extracted from the ISO with WinRAR to the one extracted with Daemon Tools?

IF they are different I would say that WinRAR is corrupting the files, or eitheir it is not able to interpret the ISO encoding so well as advertised.

No offense, but it serves to show what most of us always say about ISO files... They were NOT designed to be tampered with!

btw: why do you have WinXP in an ISO? don't you have the original CD?
