JS2E Runtime Environment XP installation etc.

I have been trying to get to the bottom of what may be the best practices for installing Java functionality for WinXP.

At present I dislike the fact that the JS2E Runtime Environment installation seems to require the downloading of some core packages that are expanded (zips) & processed by an 'online' (server side?) java installation applet.

Why is this frustrating?

Because this:

1. erodes the ability for the user to select or return to a previous version on his machine, or more simply

2. does not permit one to deploy the version downloaded to other machines or to reinstall.

Also how would you slipstream this Sun JVM into a Windows SP2 or SP1 install disc?

I may be losing my grip on the horns of the XP bull...

help... *gulp* :(

heres a link to the manual java download

You might want to ask in the unattended forums to find out how to put it in your custom windows install.

I'm not sure were to pick up older version off the JVM by SUN though.

The official unattended guide tells you how to integrate the JRE into your install CD.

Go to the link ChunkDog mentions, to download the full network-install version of it (you can download then install it from that file itself over the network or from CD - without needing to access the internet). And if you need the JRE to install silently for unattended installs, go here to download a custom rebuilt installer - link.

Or you can just use the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine that older version of windows use. It's not supported anymore, but I find that it still works great for 99% of the sites out there. It's faster than Sun's version, and you control it via Internet Options/Advanced.

Sincere thanks all.

With regards to the MS JVM. What can you tell me about potential security holes with this implementation?

I presume that those have been corrected or do not apply as I do not suppose you would compromise your system for the sake of a faster running JRE?

Also what is the JRE to a JVM?

I realise that I have been using these terms interchangeably, but they are not exactly interchangeable, are they?

Also what is the 'muffins' directory used for?

C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javaws\muffins

What the heck?

Anyone recommend a Java forum with members enthusiastic enough about this stuff to be ready to make these obscure things clear to a neophyte?
