Since moving to a smaller company I now have the problem of Windows Product Activation [WPA] in XP and Office 2003.

Windows XP activation has not been too much of a problem yet. But I was wondering the best way to auto activate it after a reinstall. Have found a few pages that describe different ways to backup the unique file and replace it to automate this. Has anyone got any real experience of this, and what are the pit falls?

As for Office 2003 it seems that every other day someone is being set to the limited mode. Many phone calls and emails to Microsoft and I am still waiting for them to give me the unlock codes. All the software is genuine but due to a raft of new hardware the software dropping down to limited mode. The software is ours yet we cannot use it. A temporary work around is a rebuild of XP using open office as the office suite.

After my little rant I basically want to know is there a preferred way to backup/restore so the software does not need activated all the time or at least stays in full mode not limited.

Has anyone got some good advice or help with these problems?

Hail hail

* Office 2003: Activate over the Internet and save opa11.dat.

file stored here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\OFFICE\DATA

[if you can't see the OFFICE\DATA folder, you need to show hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View.]
