cohenfive Posted November 13, 2004 Posted November 13, 2004 i've been trying to get rid of spyware off my pc. there is a file called: vgaanti.exe that is always running and tieing up my pc's resources. i've tried to get rid of it via hijackthis and two files cannot be deleted this way:here is the location of the files:c:\windows\help\starter\vgaanti.exeandc:\windows\help\starter\vgaanti.exe rerunwhen i search into my hard drive, in the windows\help\starter folder are two items:1.folder named help_mell which has an html document called 'viewer'2. an html document called 'welcome' i've asked a spyware expert and his os (xp pro sp2) has no help\starter folder at all...the question is whether i can or should get rid of the items in the folder or the folder itself? then i can move on to our other spyware stuff...thanks in advance!!
cohenfive Posted November 13, 2004 Author Posted November 13, 2004 sorry, maybe i wasn't being clear enough...should the folder: windows\help\starter exist in xp home sp2 or is it a likely home for my vgaanti.exe file which is really messing me up? if it shouldn't be there then i'll just blow away the whole thing....but would like some confirmation if possible..thanks.
CoffeeFiend Posted November 13, 2004 Posted November 13, 2004 It's safe to delete. You could also try using some spyware scanners (some are freeware too)
cohenfive Posted November 13, 2004 Author Posted November 13, 2004 i use spybot and adaware as well as hijack this...the bugger won't leave volunarily but i'm going to delete that entire folder and we'll see..pretty sophisticated spyware...
cohenfive Posted November 14, 2004 Author Posted November 14, 2004 was advised (anandtech os and spyware group) to kill that folder via killbox...will try it tonight (after backing up my stuff!!). hopefully it will leave me alone...
