There are two user shell folders dealing with application data:

1.) AppData

2.) Local AppData

What's the difference? Which applications will store their data where and why?

I don't know where you're getting "Local AppData" from but "AppData" is set to the following folder:

%userprofile%\Application Data, in other words,

C:\Documents And Settings\Your Username\Application Data

Any newer application should put any user specific application data into that folder rather than in the programs main directory.

Theoretically, the difference between the two is that, as Application Data can be redirected through Group Policies to a network location, Local Application Data has been created so software developers can use an alternate folder to store bigger files

Ah, ic! So both folders could be used by any application in any case, only depends on the developer of the software, right?

question #1: if I want to move the appdata folder(s) to another partition should I move both of them?!?

question #2: would it be problematic to let both registry entries point at the same folder?
