is this like defraging or just compacting?

when i move about 10Gb of data from one partition to a different partition, i presume that the data is re-compacted, (partially like defragging)

Is this correct?

As i am trying to figure out if its worthwhile to it will make any difference when shifting the 10Gb of data onto a different drive.

Just curious!!! :thumbup

Correct.

You could say that it is sort of like that. When this new partition is empty, the files you write to it, will be properly sequential without being fragmented. I do it once a month - move away all files from a partition to another, format the partition, then move back the files. That clears out the junk accumulated in system folders (System Volume Information, _Restore, Recycle Bin) and its quicker than letting any utility de-frag that partition.
