Hyperlinks not working after SP2

Hello Friends,

After installing SP2 on XP Pro I have the following problem:

IE 6.0 browser and Outlook Express fail to connect when I click on a link to an url.

As long as I paste an address in the address bar everything is ok but when I get to the page and that page shows me links to other sites I am stuck.

The only way I can get to that other address is by looking in the properties of the link, copy the address and paste it into the address bar!

Links to other HTM's on the same site work normally.

In short: Links to other sites don't work anymore during browsing the net!

I know that SP2 is only out for a month now but maybe someone has run in to this or heard about it.

I suppose it has to do with some setting biut I have not been able to find it so far.

Hope someone can hel me out.

Have you tried resetting the IE defaults?

Also, check to make sure that all HTM, HTML, XML and maybe even URL extensions are setup to open with IE.

Your first suggstion does not solve the problem.

Where do I go for the second suggestion?

It's under tools -> folder options -> File Types tab.

You'll have a huge list, but scroll down and just check each one. On a side note, My URL one doesn't point to a web browser, but it points to "shell doc object and control library".

You might even try removing IE (control panel -> windows components), rebooting and then adding IE back in.

Try a rebuild install of windows (boot off windows cd, hit enter, F8, R for repair). It's the closest thing you can get to a fresh install without loosing any programs or data. But this may not work since registry settings are kept.

I figured that you were talking about the file associations and looked at them.

I have a second computer and checked them against the faulty one. Settings are the same. As a matter of fact the same as yours too!

I think I'll go for a complete reinstall. I made myself a slipstreamd XP Pro/SP2 CD

and am thinking of making an unattended as well.

Hello Paul and those who may run into the same problem.

I finally found the solution on this site:

The problem has little to do with SP2 itself but boils down to the result of installing it. Something went wrong that is for sure! The problem itself is older than SP2

and is clearly described in the followiing article.

I did exactly what it suggested and the problem seems to be solved.

In OE, IE won't respond to a Hyperlink

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 urlmon.dll. Then go to: IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Reset Web Settings.

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 actxprxy.dll and then repeat the process for regsvr32 shdocvw.dll.

Check your settings here:

Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Highlight URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol/Advanced/Edit. Under Application used to perform action it should read: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
