XPerties Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 I'm sure this has been discussed a million times and I'll be dam if I can find a good thread on it using search feature but what's up with IE not having the ability to view website sources and right clicking and saving image as anymore? It worked once in a blue moon with sp1 but since sp2 it hasn't worked at all. View source never works and save image as is always defaulting to .bmp even if the file is a gif or jpg.
CoffeeFiend Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 I see that on many, many PCs (not even just on xp, let alone just xp sp2). Page view doesn't work, and IE wants to save all pictures format as BMPs no matter what... The ultimate fix: a good browser (firefox).
XPerties Posted September 3, 2004 Author Posted September 3, 2004 I agree 100% about frefox but this is the issue with that:I can set firefox as the default browser but windows complains. One example is when you have a link in outlook and you click it I always get an error.A few other troubles happened when I tried to stay with firefox but I can't recall right now. Trust me when I say I wish firefox would 100% divert to my main browser.
oftentired Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 I know this works well enough in Win9x. I don't know what extra steps may be required in XP. Safe Mode maybe? Most definately admin.temporarily rename the IE folderrun OEclick a linkwhen Windows asks you what is going on point it at your browser of choiceafter that you should be able to rename the IE folder backand OE links should open in your browser of choice
prathapml Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 @oftentiredThanks for the suggestion. Its actually easier in XP. Just start the browser you want, set it to takeover the link protocols (therefore becoming default browser) it should manage. And set IE to not ask to be made "default browser" every time it starts. But that's not the main topic here.@XPertiesYes, there are a few problems communicating between those components. The integrated components in XP don't want to play well with external software. For one example, is yours above (that outlook link error). Another is native links (NOT USER-POSTED LINKS) launched from the interface/menus in Windows/MSN Messenger which will insist opening only in IE.As for the main topic of this thread, XPerties, I see an "Image toolbar" pop-up whenever I take my cursor inside a picture (any format) in IE6 (SP2 also, before you ask). Then you can use the save Image function, and the beauty of WinXP shows up once again - you can save in BMP/JPEG/GIF. And just now for your sake, I double-checked the details (which I'm telling in this paragraph) on my US English, XP Pro SP2 - it works. About why it may not have worked for you:Maybe you have applied the registry tweak that disables the Image toolbar. Or some other .REG accidentally ran without your knowledge or was run by somebody. Hoping this helps....
chrischan Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 im having the same problem here with my IE6:View Source- disabledAll images can only be saved as .bmpthe image toolbar does appear when i put my cursor over the pics, but still only .bmp is available. PLEASE HELP US OUT!!
XPerties Posted September 4, 2004 Author Posted September 4, 2004 @prathapmlThank you. I haven't added any tweaks or reg hacks. Also as chrischan said, my toolbar only gives the option for bmp. It's such a pain to have to open a different browser just to save the image. I will try what you and oftentired suggested and see if I can't get firefox to play nice with XP.
chrischan Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 well i do have another way to save the images as their own formats.i will recommend u guys Download Accelerator..or any software similar. everytime if i wana save an image i jus right click and choose Download with DAP. I then get the original format downloaded on to my desktop. Fast n easy.any other possible and efficient ways?
GreenMachine Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 For what it's worth ... I noticed the option to only save as bitmap if the file is not found in the cache. I assume that since it cannot find the original file, it will allow you to save the image from the screen, which would need to be in bitmap form. That also make some sort of sense for the the "View Source" option: if it cannot find the cached version, it cannot show it to you. Perhaps playing around with the cache will reveal something. Sorry I can't tell you more: I use 2003, and it's been a while since I've seen this behaviour. Just throwing some ideas at 'cha.
ravashaak Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 I've ran across this problem quite a bit on different systems. Not being able to view source and being only able to save images as bitmaps really sucks. And this bug (with many different causes), has existed for a long time now. There are fixes, but I've found the best one to be a better browser. The adjustment period might not be 100% painless, but for me, FireFox rocks! If you persist in your quest to repair IE, I wish you luck. I've met with about a 1/3 success rate when confronted with this issue. Even then, I've noticed that many of those same systems will sooner or later revert back to this same behavior. Most annoying indeed. - Ravashaak
CoffeeFiend Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 Same here, it's not usually on very tweaked systems, IE just seems to be very buggy...
prathapml Posted September 4, 2004 Posted September 4, 2004 About the replies that recommend moving to a different browser instead:Thoughts for the sick of IEThis initially is what I wanted to submit in this thread, but to avoid deviating from the topic at hand, I decided it would be better off having its own thread.
