Help a n00b!

hi, i am very interested in the type of thing these "switches" allow me to do, so basically i will say what i think they are - somthing that auto installs a program without need for interfearence etc., basically is this correct, if so, how do i actually "use them" is there a way to create a cd that will auto install all these apps when i format my pc or similar?

basically is there a beginners guide as i read the stickys and they dont really say much tbh
