question do i need to remove microsoft java vm before i isntall sun java vm?

Not necessary to remove the MS-JVM before using Sun's, but still you will do well to remove it. Also, if you are using win2k or XP slip-streamed with the latest service packs, the JVM is already gone.

So no m$ Java VM in SP2? I read this which really doesn't say. I am actually just rebooting an xpsp2 machine after completing step 2...

Actually, if you do step 4 from that guide, you'll find that all the files are present and the reg keys are present also.... I think the m$ JVM is included in SP2

actually SP2 has the MSJava update to v.3810. Meaning that, if you previously to apply SP2, had installed MSJava v.3809 and below (either separately or with the SP1 pack), it will update to 3810 when you apply the Service Pack 2.

Now, if you slipstream, it won't show. Meaning that if you install XP slipstremad with SP2, then 3089, the update for 3810 will appear in your Windows Update page.

Thanks for the info dude... I created a SS SP2 disc, but haven't used it yet. Just applied SP2 to an exsisting running install.

Sun's "user-friendly" java site has to be one of my top ten hated webpages. i suppose it's fine for people who don't know their mouse from their monitor, but if you're trying to find anything specific other than whatever java version it tries to automatically install on your machine every time you happen to blink then good luck. :
