JupiterSSJ4 Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 Hi,I have been getting tons of complaints today about user's PC's restarting out of the blue today at my work. They say that it just restarted for no reason.Well, I downloaded the Intel monitor prog. to see if the temps were over... and they were fine. Finally, I remembered yesterday that my pc's at home all download like 6 windows critical updates yesterday and checked out the windows update on the user's pcs. It turns out that since we have automatic updating turned on, and it is set to do it at random times during the day for each person, that the update that they were getting automatically restarts the computer, no questions asked about IF you want to shut down, it just does it. I mean, it usually at leasts asks if you want to restart the computer. I have had people say that they got up to go get some coffee and came back and the computer was restarted. This is the first time I have ever seen it do this and it is a major pain. Has anyone else had this problem today or yesterday?? Microsoft should be ashamed. All the PC's are XP Pro SP1 and a few are 2000Pro SP4.
tums911 Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 That's a new one. Yesterday at work I did a clean install of Windows XP and went to windows updates to get all the hotfixes. Since this was the first time this computer went to Windows Update it needed to install the Update Plugin and when it was done installing it asked me to restart the computer. I have never seen that before.
kmf Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 My computer all of the sudden restarted on its own the other day and I couldn't figure out why.I don't have the computer set to automatically update though.
gamehead200 Posted July 14, 2004 Posted July 14, 2004 My laptop just shut off on me today... Probably was a video driver error... I got a BSoD yesterday...Does it just restart with no warning?
JupiterSSJ4 Posted July 15, 2004 Author Posted July 15, 2004 My laptop just shut off on me today... Probably was a video driver error... I got a BSoD yesterday...Does it just restart with no warning?yeah, and they all did right about the time they are set to auto update.
Joe User 99 Posted July 15, 2004 Posted July 15, 2004 It turns out that since we have automatic updating turned on, and it is set to do it at random times during the day for each person.... You have all your corporate users autoupdating from WindowsUpdate?Microsoft should be ashamed. Not a good idea. Which I guess you realize about now. But I don't think it is MS that should be ashamed. It depends on how your network is set up, but you might want to look at Software Update Services (SUS), basically, it lets you run a intranet based Automatice Updates, which the Admin approves/disapproves what gets installed. And it syncs it's updates from MS, so it is up to date with current patches, etc. Also, it cuts down on your outside bandwidth. Learn more about SUS here:Software Update Services HomeAlso, burried somewhere in the SUS documentation, is how to configure your automatic updates to work with SUS, and different options such as scheduled updates for restricted users, or a interactive approach for users with admin rights.Might be a better option for you. Check it out...just a little info to think about.Oh...and it's a free addon for 2000/2003 Server.
