I have windows xp on an AMD 1.9xp system with 512 RAM. Recently, the light which activates when your computer is working ryhthmically come on for about one or two seconds every 2 seconds. This is driving me crazy, as i can't work or really do anything on my computer without hearing this and it seems to be significantly slowing my system down. I don't know alot about computers, but i have tried virus scans and reverting my hard drive to no avail. I even changed my virtual memory file to 512 minimum. I would appreciate any suggestion anyone might have for a remedy as I have run out of things to try with my limited knowledge. I will erase my hard drive and all its contents in the next few days if i can't figure this out. Thanks

my computer/right click, choose properties/system restore.....do you have it enabled? Try turning it off and see if that helps. With this enable its writing to your HD on a normal basis in the event you want to back it up.

Also how big and what type is your HD and what format is it, Fat32 or NTFS?

Have you run a diskscan to see if theres any errors on the HD?

Grab FileMon from http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml and run it, it should tell you what activity is going on in your PC. I should warn you that it gets filled up with activity very quick if you're running a lot of applications, so turn off all the apps you know of, including firewall and antivirus protection and then run the program. You should be able to pinpoint the executable thats causing HDD activity.

Hope that helps

Thanks all for help so far. I do have Microsoft Office on my system, but I never open it up. I rarely use it, so perhaps i might uninstall it anyway. I have run a disk scan which came out ok. As far as the hard drive and how its configured, I really don't know. I'm afraid I may be a bit out of my league here, but everybody has to start somewhere, so thanks much for help.

P.S. Just as I finished this reply, I noticed the activity suddenly ceased! It was the system restore thing, the bastard! Thanks much, you all are brilliant.
