I've had no luck getting that one in unattended either, with both the correct and incorrect updates.

If anyone manages to install this from either SVCPACK.INF or CMDLINES.TXT, and it does not show up on Windows Update, and the two files (dplayx.dll and dpwsockx.dll) are the correct version (5.3.903, I think...) after installation, I'd be insterested to know how ...

DirectX90-KB839643-x86 is the update for directx 9.x only , WindowsXP-KB839643-x86 is the update for directx 8 which is included in an xp default install

Let me clarify:

I use the /Q /O /U /N /Z switches (Quiet, Overwrite OEM files, Unattended, No Uninstall, and No Reboot). That works fine, the installer is run, the log files report the DLLs have been copied to the DLL cache (which they were not), but not system32, and indicates a possible SFC error. The DX9 / Patch versions ARE coherent: DX9 all around. The patch IS listed in Add/Remove programs, but the DLLs are not present on the system. The patch is called from SVCPACK.INF, AFTER the DX9 install. I have tried a few variations of this theme.

So, if anyone has succeeded, please let me know how YOU did it.

what about trying the patch from runonce as it could just be that a reboot is needed to finish off the main directx 9 install that was started from svcpack.inf before the update will install correctly ? if that makes sense

From RunOnce, or similar, no problem. However ...

but no WindowsXP-KB839643-x86,same error

i did check it to it's v5.3.900 for the dll files and it must be v5.3.903 so there's no update installed :)

@ all

I installed from my last batch file like this,

ECHO.
color 0f
ECHO Installing DirectX 90 Security Update
start /wait  %systemdrive%\install\hotfixes\directx90-kb839643-x86-enu.exe /quiet /norestart

checked dllcache and sys32 and dplayx.dll and dpwsockx.dll

are v5.3.0.903 if that means it worked well good?

@sixpack: Not really. It is an SFC question. you could copy there and System32, but if you do that, you don't need to even bother with the installer.

@bonedaddy: Spill the beans, did you call that batch from SVCPACK.INF or CMDLINES.TXT?

Just to be clearer ... the problem is not in calling/finding the patch, the problem is that the patch, properly called, does not install. The error log shows that it did run.
