dcromwell Posted May 17, 2004 Posted May 17, 2004 I decided to give it a shot and burn my DVD with SP2 integrated into my normal XP Pro SP1A unattended DVD.Upon bootup I get an error stating that the file NTFS.SYS is corrupt. It then forces a reboot.Anyone know what could cause this?
dcromwell Posted May 17, 2004 Author Posted May 17, 2004 Forgot to mention one thing. The only thing that I know that I did differently on this DVD is that I didn't finalize it, but that shouldn't cause the error...???
dcromwell Posted May 17, 2004 Author Posted May 17, 2004 Here is some more information. This error is occurring when booting from the CD. It is at the very beginning of the DOS portion of the install (where it asks about installing a third-party raid driver, etc.). It gets up to the fat32.sys file and then comes to an error stating that the FAT32.SYS file is corrupt. Can I just copy the fat32.sys file from my SP1 CD????
RyanVM Posted May 17, 2004 Posted May 17, 2004 Does the ISO work correctly in VirtualPC? If so, then you've probably got a bad burn. If not, try re-integrating SP2.And given that NFTS.sys and FAT32.sys are what allow the OS to read the filesystem, I doubt you'll have any luck copying files over later.
mmarable Posted May 17, 2004 Posted May 17, 2004 I ran into the exact same problem using UnattendedXP and XPCreate to slipstream SP2 into my XP-SP1 CD. It worked prefectly if I slipstreamed SP2 into my original "gold" XP disk though. I don't want to say that there's an issue with slipstreaming SP2 over SP1, but it has never worked for me.Unfortunatly, right now it's all chalked up to the fact that SP2 is still in beta release and not final. So, you're kind of stuck unless you have an XP gold CD to use. I just went back to SP1 and slipstreamed in all the patches, besides XPLode doesn't work with SP2, so I really didn't have a choice.
dcromwell Posted May 17, 2004 Author Posted May 17, 2004 I do not use VirtualPC so I am not sure if it works or not. I just re-integrated SP2 so I will see if it works. I don't have a problem with FAT32.SYS, just the NTFS.SYS file. I will see if the new integration works now.
dcromwell Posted May 17, 2004 Author Posted May 17, 2004 Just burned a DVD with the new integration of SP2 and I am still getting the NTFS.SYS error.....
dcromwell Posted May 17, 2004 Author Posted May 17, 2004 And given that NFTS.sys and FAT32.sys are what allow the OS to read the filesystem, I doubt you'll have any luck copying files over later.I wasn't talking about copying them over later. I am talking about copying the old (off of the slipstreamed SP1A DVD) over and replacing the new NTFS.SYS file. The file version would be different but at least it wouldn't be corrupt....
dcromwell Posted May 17, 2004 Author Posted May 17, 2004 The NTFS.SYS file from SP1A did not work. I got an even worse error message... Looks like I will just add the SP2 as an application and install it that way instead of slipstreaming. I am tired of wasting DVDs. (Yes, I know about VirtualPC and VMWare).....
RyanVM Posted May 17, 2004 Posted May 17, 2004 If you know about VirtualPC, then I suggest you use it. You can download a 45 day trial from their website. And relating back to your other thread, this problem could very well be being caused by a bad slipstream. Try using the SP1a slipstreaming method and see how that works for you.
dcromwell Posted May 17, 2004 Author Posted May 17, 2004 I will try this. Can I slipstream right over SP1A?
dcromwell Posted May 17, 2004 Author Posted May 17, 2004 I have been doing this all along. The /integrate switch does the exect same thing as the update.exe /sC:\XPCDI still get the NTFS.SYS is corrupted error.
dcromwell Posted May 17, 2004 Author Posted May 17, 2004 Can someone attach or at least link to their ntfs.sys file. I am not sure if it would help or not but it is worth a shot. By the way, I have the Technical Preview of RC1. Not sure if it matters or not. (Is there something different about the Technical Preview of RC1 and the true beta of RC1? On the Microsoft XP SP2 Technical Preview site, it mentions that it is based on Release Candidate 1 of the SP2.
RyanVM Posted May 18, 2004 Posted May 18, 2004 They're the same thing. PM me for a link to NTFS.sys you can use (I can't attach it to this message).
