xameleon Posted April 26, 2004 Posted April 26, 2004 Does anyone have this file? Windowsxp-kb823372-x86-enu.exeI don't seem to be able to get it from Microsoft. They say you are supposed to pay for it or something? This is rather odd as it is just a hotfix for XP that includes newer versions of shell32.dll and some others.More information can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823372Any help is appreciated!thx
kenkueh Posted April 26, 2004 Posted April 26, 2004 Note This fix will reduce the delay described in the “Symptoms” section of this article, but will not completely get rid of the delay.Seem like installing this hotfix doesn't help much. I'm wondering how u get to know about this hotfixes?Regards,Kenkueh
n00b Posted April 26, 2004 Posted April 26, 2004 I heard that if you CALL them you can get any hotfix you want, they don't even check your PID's or anything like that.
emcee-ig Posted April 27, 2004 Posted April 27, 2004 I heard that if you CALL them you can get any hotfix you want, they don't even check your PID's or anything like that.if you call them, and you can tell them the exact article you are having problems with, they will email you the patch for free, without any questions, we had to do that for an office2k3 patch just recentlywe had an issue with office2k3 and accessing mapped netware drives with xls docs in it with spaces in the name, it is a patch that will be built in sp1 for offce 2k3, they went ahead and emailed it to us.
tim Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 I can get hold of this patch if you really want it.It's about 3MB. Is somebody willing to host it?
xameleon Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 @ enuffsaid : i know how to fix the problem but it takes way too long to wait for all them doc files to open. shortening the delay would be really great.@ tim: would be very nice if u could give me the file - maybe email it if u can't host it anywhere? thanx alot@ kenkueh : I just did a search with google and stumbled upon it by accident despite it not helping much i would like to try it and hey it's got a new shell32.dll maybe that will take care of XP explorer crashing so often??
xameleon Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 @ enuffsaid : to be precise, nobody deleted the templates. we have simply switched to a new server (win2k3) and previously, they were stored on a netware server. the path has not changed BUT the UNC path has, of course. Now, unfortunately, Word has stored the UNC path of the template and hence is unable to find them. If it would search the network for say 30 seconds that would be ACCEPTABLE but up to 10 minutes is unfeasible..
xameleon Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 @ enuffsaid: blaming someone is easy but fixing the problem? it's all human errors, man invented computers, man wrote software for them I have however found an acceptable solution now. Seems like Word is satisfied when it just finds the old server so I created an alias record that matches the old server's name for the new server. The template doesn't have to be there but as long as it can find the server it will no longer wait and just open the doc!
xameleon Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 @enuffsaid: Well, part of my job are certain sysadmin tasks. We are a small firm so there is no specific sysadmin.I think this fix I found is really the easiest way out. Ridiculous that M$ actually suggests RENAMING the server to its old name!As if renaming a domain controller was so easy With Win2003 i think you actually *can* but it's really not recommandable
