Looking at that uber-thread may be daunting for Young Pete. Here a recent conversation in which I posted some registry code which does in fact disable several of the Visual Settings:

Scroll down and you'll find what you're looking for. But by all means, take an hour and look through the first thread referenced above. Lots of good stuff in there as well.
