I have installed Windows 98 SE on an old laptop, so that I can use again my old software ;-)

In this context, I have also installed the unofficial Service Pack 2.1 d.


What struck me, that I, for example, "computer-interior" although can select the included in Windows 98 SE Wallpaper., it is adapted to the respective desktop wallpaper everything.

In other words, sound, mouse, color theme etc. change accordingly. But the desktop does not display the corresponding background image, but only a solid background.

The problem occurred after installing the unofficial Service Pack 2.1 d.

I then once compared where the difference lies.

Windows 98 SE without unofficial service pack:

In the folder C: \ Windows, there is a file named "Plus.jpg" which then also under Control Panel -> Display -> Background automatically available for selection and always contains the appropriate background image to the selected desktop theme topic.

In the folder C: \ Windows this file is missing. Accordingly, it is not automatically available.

When I select them, a deskotp Theme I have to hand the appropriate background Control Panel -> Display -> Background

Select I then attack with Browse the .jpg files in the folder C: \ Program Files \ Plus! \.

Note:

These are the included in Windows 98 SE Desktop Themes. I have no separate installation of a Windows 98 PLUS! CD made.

Also I have the Desktop Themes Control Panel -> Software repeatedly deactivated and reactivated.

Does anyone have an idea or the same problem.

Maybe it's an erroneous entry in the registry, which prevents the respective background image of desktop themes with the name Plus.bmp is stored in the folder c:\ Windows\ ?

In dem Zusammenhang habe ich auch das inoffizielle Service Pack 2.1 d installiert.

Sowei so gut.

Dabei ist mir aufgefallen, dass ich die in Windows 98 SE inkludierten Desktop-Motive z. B. Computer-Innenleben zwar auswählen kann,

es wird alles bis auf den jeweiligen Desktop-Hintergrund angepasst.

Das heißt, Sound, Mauszeiger, Farbschema usw. ändern sich entsprechend. Aber Der Desktop zeigt nicht das entsprechende Hintergrundbild an, sondern

lediglich einen einfarbigen Hintergrund.

Das Problem trat erst nach der Installation des inoffiziellen Service Pack 2.1 d auf.

Ich habe dann einmal verglichen wo der Unterschied liegt.

Windows 98 SE ohne inoffizielles Service Pack:

Im Ordner C:\Windows gibt es eine Datei mit dem Namen "Plus.jpg", die dann auch unter Systemsteuerung -> Anzeige -> Hintergrund automatisch zur Auswahl steht und immer das entsprechende Hintergrund-Bild enthält zum ausgewählten Desktop-Motiv Thema.

Windows 98 SE nach der inoffiziellen Service Pack Installation:

Im Ordner C:\Windows fehlt diese Datei. Dementsprechend steht sie auch nicht automatisch zur Auswahl.

Wenn ich nun ein Deskotp-Theme auswähle muss ich von Hand den entsprechenden Hintergrund unter Systemsteuerung -> Anzeige -> Hintergrund

auswählen. Ich greife dann mit Durchsuchen auf die JPG-Dateien im Ordner c:\Programme\Plus!\ zu.

Anmerkung:

Es handelt sich um die in Windows 98 SE inkludierten Desktop-Motive. Ich habe keine seperate Installation von einer Windows 98 PLUS! CD gemacht.

Auch habe ich bereits die Desktop-Motive unter Systemsteuerung -> Software mehrmals inaktiviert und wieder aktiviert.

Hat jemand eine Idee oder das gleiche Problem.

Vielleicht ist es ein fehlerhafter Eintrag in der Registry, der verhindert, dass das jeweilige Hintergrund-Bild der Desktop-Themes mit dem Namen Plus.bmp im Ordner c:\Windows\ abgelegt wird???

Don't install the Service Pack if it causes problems. I began to dislike SP's for Win9x in general. They might be good, but not for everyone/not for every system language.

Also, to minimize any problems with wallpapers on Win98SE, use .BMP only. You can easely convert .JPG to .BMP using Paint or IrfanView.

Lösung!



Nach langer Recherche bin ich auf den Verursacher gestoßen und habe das Problem lösen können.

Schuld ist wie gesagt die Datei JPEGIM32.FLT die durch das inoffizielle Patch 2.1 d überschrieben wird.
Ursprünglich von 1999 mit einer Version von 2005

Einfach die ursprüngliche Datei von der Windows 98 CD exthrahieren mit sfc.exe und durch die neuere durch die ältere Version ersetzen.

Kleine Abweichung allerdings zur Beschreibung von Microsoft.
Die ursprüngliche Datei nicht in c:\Programme\Gemeinsame Dateien\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt extrahieren sondern in den Ordner
c:\windows\msapps\grphflt

Dann läufts wieder.

Maybe the respective newer filter has unfulfilled dependencies. Please check with Dependency Walker or any other similar utility and see if there's any missing dependency file(s) and/or API(s). My version of JPEGIM32.FLT is 2003.1100.8165 and comes from MS Office 2003.

I don't have any themes installed in the PLUS! folder so can't test, but placing a JPG image in C:\WINDOWS\WEB\Wallpaper does show it in the Display Properties > Background >Wallpaper list, so I guess the JPEG filter does work.

However, as MrMateczko noted above, the service packs are usually only for English versions of the operating system - unless other specific language versions are available - and mixing different language files can lead to unwanted results.

Anyway, thank you for the solution in regard to the filter issue. In short, for non-German speakers: extracting the original JPEGIM32.FLT filter from the Windows 98 CD and replacing the newer filter from the service pack with the extracted original one fixes the issue of missing JP(E)G-type wallpapers from the Display control panel when Desktop Themes are installed.
