Why does Explorer allow row specific column selection?

In Win8 Explorer (not sure if also in 7 or before) pressing the left and right arrows changes the selection to the various columns of the selected row:

 

 

Instead of scrolling sideways you have to press multiple times to get first to the "edge" column. This isn't a spreadsheet. I don't see any functionality it provides. Any idea what's the point?
