Help with MPU-401 needed

I installed XP Pro on my new computer. This MPU-401 was my default MIDI Music Playback device. All other types were ok(ram. mp3,mpg), but the mid-files didn't work. The playback started ok, but there was no sound. The Device Manager says that it is working ok.

I changed the device to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth and the midi-files work.

BUT: now I am missing all the computer sounds: opening Xp etc. I don't need those, but....

Anyone have an idea what happened.

might u be having the SW synth muted?
