Word, columns, paper margins

Hi nice people!

If I have sections with several columns in a Word document, and want to increase the left or right paper margins, Word 97 and Word 2003 fail.

Is there a patch to this bug? Or a special way to use Word? I've vaguely seen that saving as a Word 2003 file improves the situation, but that's not clear.
