Backup Avast 4.8 database?

Featured Replies

I will likely be reinstalling '98 in the next few weeks. The only problem I'm anticipating is having to download the huge Avast virus database again.

It appears that C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\400.vps contains the virus database. Would I be able to save and then replace this file in a fresh Windows and Avast install? Any other thoughts?

Win98 4.10.1998 upgraded to 4.10.2222, 400 Mhz, 224 MB RAM.

I believe updating the 400.vps file would work. However, you will need to disable the self-defense module in Avast! or do it from DOS or another OS while Avast! is disabled.

Alternatively, you could download the manual update file from this URL:

Thanks for your input, Prozactive.

I believe the Avast self-defense module wasn't implemented until v. 5x. Still, 4.8 likely has some sort of self-protection, and you have given me some good ideas should I encounter a problem replacing the vps file. Thanks also for the DB download link, I had forgotten about that. I can likely use my download manager (FDM) to painlessly acquire the latest DB instead of using the Avast interface.

I think I'm good to go. :)
