hibernate problem

For some time my computer would go into standby and then hibernate after a preset interval. Now, however, when going from standby to hibernate, it just wakes up the computer and I can no longer enter standby or hibernate until I reboot. After a reboot, I can force either standby or hibernate via task master or my keyboard, but it will not go from standby to hibernate automatically. If I disable the standby function, there is no problem hibernating automatically after a preset time delay. Any idea how to return to the smooth transition from standby to hibernate which was once the norm? Thanks, esmo
