  1. XP Pro, SP3. I set the machine to go into standby and then hibernate after preset time period has passed. It goes into standby as scheduled, but when it comes to the time to hibernate, it wakes up the computer instead of hibernating. It will then repeat this process each time, (standby - wake up) according to the preselected time periods. I have tried a third party program but got the same results. Any help much appreciated.
  2. My pc is locally built, not a name brand. When I first replied I didn't know that pata is the same as ide. That is what these drives are. What I got for pci/ven is: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24DB&SUSYS_24D28086&REV_02\3&13COBC5&0&P9. I wonder if would help to physically disconnect the drives, reboot without them, and reinstall from scratch. I appreciate your interest. Unfortunately I cannot get at my computer on a daily basis, so there may be some delays in my replies.
  3. The drives are identical Optiarc DVD RW drives. I think they are made by Samsung, but not sure. At any rate they are neither PATA nor SATA. My motherboard is Phoenix Technologies 6.00 PG. I am able to boot using my Acronis True Image boot disc. I did not try booting from any other disc. I have never tried reinstalling chipset drivers and I don't know how to do it.
  4. xp pro sp3. The drives are recognized by the bios and by windows. The respective icons appear as they should. When I insert a disc, the icon changes to show that a disc is indeed in the drive. When I try to read from the disc, I get a blank screen, or a message telling me to insert a disc. After some experimenting I found that if I booted with a disk (not bootable) in one of the drives, that drive could read the inserted disc, except for a music disc. I could even change discs, but just for the current session, and just that drive. If I rebooted without a disc in a drive, neither drive could read an inserted disc. While this works with either drive, it does not work with both together. I can also burn discs. I don't know when this started, because sometimes weeks go by without my needing to use an optical drive. I have tried uninstalling both drives, and Windows reinstalls them properly on the next reboot. Incidentally, if a drive was reading discs, it would continue to do so after recovery from standby or hibernate. Any ideas?
  5. For some time my computer would go into standby and then hibernate after a preset interval. Now, however, when going from standby to hibernate, it just wakes up the computer and I can no longer enter standby or hibernate until I reboot. After a reboot, I can force either standby or hibernate via task master or my keyboard, but it will not go from standby to hibernate automatically. If I disable the standby function, there is no problem hibernating automatically after a preset time delay. Any idea how to return to the smooth transition from standby to hibernate which was once the norm? Thanks, esmo

    slipstream sp3

Sorry I misunderstood your question. I don't remember what file types were recognized. I will have to rerun the program, and should get a reply to you sometime tomorrow.

Ponch: my desktop where the downloaded sp3 install disk is stored contains an assortment of files, not just .exe. There are also .rar, .pdf, .doc, and some just for storage without any extension. nlite finds other files, but does not find the sp3 install disk. Submix8c: I run nlite and I copy the contents of my xp install disk to a new file. I click on next and nlite tells me to browse to where the sp3 install disk was saved. This is on my desktop, and nlite does not recognize it. I don't know how to say this more clearly, The option of selecting the sp3 install disk does not exist. It is not there when searching with nlite, but it is on my desktop. I therefore can't select it or point it anywhere.

A screen comes up asking to scroll to the location of the sp3 installation I downloaded from MS. It is on my desktop. nlite recognizes some of the files I have on my desktop, but does not recognize the sp3 install disk named Windowxkp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe. The file is 316 MB in size. As far as nlite is concerned, this file does not exist. This leaves me with a window open waiting for input which is not available, and nothing happens. The only recourse I have is to shut the program down.

The reason I am trying to create a disk including sp3 is because I have some minor issues with my xppro sp3 installation, and my service technician suggested a disk like this could solve the problems. He suggested I try nlite because he has heard of problems arising from using the command approach. He said there might be some difficulty making a disk bootable, and that it might not recognize my serial number. When I tried using nlite, it did not recognize that i had a copy of the sp3 download on my computer. I could not get further than the first step of copying the contents of my install disk to a folder on my computer. I did not get any error messages, just nothing happened when I tried to proceed. I prefer to use nlite because it includes other actions which I might find useful. Failing that I will go the command line route if it will produce a fully working disk.

Thanks for the prompt reply and the welcome. That is the source I used. The downloads I got are called Windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe. They have the exe extension but they react like .cab files. Do you know of any other source I can use? esmo

    slipstream sp3

I am totally new to nlite, and am trying to slipstream sp3 x86 using my install disk which already has sp1 and sp2. My currently installed xp includes sp3 which I added when it became available. I have downloaded sp3 from several sources, but nlite does not seem to recognize them. Apparently they are .cab files which nlite doesn't seem to like. How do I overcome this problem? Incidentally, I have a SATA drive which uses a Silicon Image SiI 3x12 controller, because my mother board does not have SATA connections. This seems to load before windows loads, so I don't think it will be a problem, Do you have any experience with this? Thanks
